I’m trying so hard to research my family from Uhowo or Uchowo Poland from back at the turn of the last century. Their surname is Kusnierski but it can be spelled so many ways. My grandmother spelled her name Kusmerski but her brother spelled it Kusnierski. She had simplified it. Her sister had simplified it even more. They are from a town Uhowo in Poland near Bialystock. My grandmother says they had money and were landowners and furriers but I can’t find anything about them living back in Poland. My great frandfather Walter (Waclaw) came to this country around 1913 or so with his brother Stephen. He had 3 other brothers of which one stayed in Poland. My grandmother is not even certain of that brother’s name. I wish I could find this information.

Walter’s mother was Victoria (Wiktoria) Kutyna. This surname also has a lot of variations. If anyone finds this post and knows anything about my family, please comment.

I had this amazing great fortune to meet a cousin (albeit second cousin or something a little more removed from first cousin) through ancestry research. I’ve been working on genealogy for a few years now so I have family trees and messages posted in various places. Last December I receive this email from a lady saying she thinks our grandfathers were brothers – and they were!! How incredibly amazing is it that I could be handed a link to my family history just like that. We shared stories about our ancestors, researched our great grandmother together (online) and became good friends. For the last 10 months we emailed as much as daily to each other.

But, we had never spoken over the phone. She had mentioned to me in an email that she wondered if I would be much different in person and how strange that would be. Well, we finally spoke on the phone in August and since then everything changed. For some strange reason, our friendship was never the same. I guess it’s like a guy/gal who are friends and try to go out on a date – and then they can’t even be friends anymore.

She is a great person and was a wonderful friend. There is so much depth to her. She’s Orthodox Jewish and would share with me about the religion and its teachings. It’s a beautiful religion. There is so much more than reciting or memorizing. The religion has so much deep meaning in the rituals and observances and practices.

Our emailing eachother dwindled to an end and I do miss her dearly.
