The boy scouts had the annual BBQ sale fundraiser. Jack volunteered 8 hours over the span of 2 days. But, lil’ Kate volunteered for 5 hours!! Really she was just going with Howard since I had to go out of town. But, what a trooper for an 8-yr old to hang out at a fund-raiser for 5 hours straight. I hope she gets the same bug for community service.

Sept ’08 – Jack had his first Beta Club meeting. He is now a card-carrying member. At his first meeting, they talked about the conference in February in Greensboro. It would take 2 school days. I told Jack he could only go if he was competing.
He was invited to join because of his good grades and the fact that he had no suspensions either in-school or out-of-school. To stay in, he has to keep the good grades and good behavior. I’m glad he joined. He didn’t let me know when he got the invitation. The first I heard of it was when he asked me to pick him up after induction. And, he didn’t tell me parents were invited. UGH!!! When I went to pick him up I saw all these parents dressed up for the induction and Jack wearing everyday clothes with no parents in tow. I’ll have to work on the boys not telling me when they are invited to join or participate in something positive. Good thing they make good decisions. Wait, what about the unknown invitations they didn’t tell me about?

Building wheelchair ramps at the third trail September 8, 2008

This weekend one of the scouts was doing his eagle project – building wheelchair ramps for the bridge on what’s called the third trail at the Andrew Jackson museum. Jack had a 10-mile hike in the afternoon but he still wanted to go work and volunteer. I gave him strict orders to come back after 2 hours. Just the same, I knew he didn’t have a watch or his phone so I went to get him after 2 hours. One of the scout leaders told me they had just started pouring concrete. I KNEW Jack would be the one mixing the concrete and that he wouldn’t want to stop.
So, he was the one mixing the concrete but he was willing to stop. It was great to see all the scouts working. There were probably about 15 scouts, about 4-5 leaders and a couple parents. The scouts were walking up a path to get what seemed like 20 lb. bags of concrete and carrying them down to the work site. I took a couple pictures the next day. They laid the concrete for the ramp but had to let it dry before coming back to set up the ramps.
Jack: 2 hrs. of community service.

My pupil was much tougher this week. He didn’t do his homework. I’m not sure why I expected he would do it. I really felt the sincerity in his response when he said he would do it. But when we worked he was very distracted and really did not want to be there. He did seem to make some progress on his times tables. I came up with some tools to help him with the other times tables like the 8 times tables and 3 times tables but they weren’t as memorable as the other tool for the 9 times tables. I know this is going to be so important for his EOG so I’m going to keep on working on it with him. I will look up other tips and tricks and tools for helping him remember his other times tables. I think I will bring in nickels to see if that helps him with his 5 times tables.
